Guardian Angel Prayer — Angel of God, My Guardian Dear

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide.

Amen.

About This Prayer

This short rhyme, known from its Latin form Angele Dei, has been taught to children for many centuries and remains one of the most widely memorized bedtime prayers in the world. It rests on the Bible's own picture of angels as God's messengers and guardians — "he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways" (Psalm 91:11, KJV). At heart it is a child's way of trusting that God's loving care does not stop when the lights go out.

When to Pray This

Pray it with young children at bedtime or before school; its rhyme makes it easy for little ones to learn by heart. Many adults still say it too, a lifelong habit of remembering that God's watch over us never sleeps.

A Verse to Hold On To

"For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." — Psalm 91:11 (KJV)
