A Birthday Prayer for My Child

Father, on this day some years ago, You put this child in my arms, and nothing has been the same since. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.

Thank You for every year of this life I get to watch — the first steps on the kitchen floor, the lost teeth and the scraped knees, the drawings on the refrigerator, the questions at bedtime that I couldn't answer, so we asked You together.

Today they are another year older, and I feel it in my chest — the pride and the ache at once. They are growing exactly as You designed, and a little faster than my heart is ready for.

So bless my child this year, Lord. Guard their body — on the playground, on the bus, on every path I cannot follow them down. Guard their mind — from cruelty, from fear, from every voice that would tell them they are not enough. Guard their heart — keep it soft in a world that pays people to harden.

Give them friends who are kind and true. Give them teachers who see what You put in them. Give them the courage to be honest, the strength to be gentle, and a laugh that never gets lost on the way to adulthood.

And Lord, most of all — draw them close to You. Long after my voice fades, let Yours go with them. Let them know You not as my God, secondhand, but as their own.

I blow out no candles today, Father, but here is my one wish anyway: a long, good, faithful life for this child I love. You gave them to me. I give them back to You, the way I do every year on this day.

When to Pray This

Pray this over your sleeping child the night before their birthday, or quietly in the kitchen while the pancakes are cooking. Some parents pray it every year and date it in a journal — a stack of birthday prayers makes a fine gift on their eighteenth.
