A Birthday Prayer for Myself
Lord, it's my birthday, and before the phone starts buzzing, I wanted a minute alone with You.
Thank You for keeping me this far. Thank You for the years I loved and the years I only survived — You were in both, even when I couldn't see it.
I'll be honest: birthdays make me take stock. Some things I hoped for by now haven't come. Some things I never asked for turned out to be gifts. Help me hold both without bitterness, and trust that my story is still being written by a good Author.
For this new year of my life, I ask simple things: health enough to do my work, love enough to give away, courage for whatever is coming that I can't see yet, and eyes open to the ordinary joy I usually walk right past.
Make me kinder this year than last. Make me braver. And on my next birthday, let me look back and see Your hand on every single month.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this first thing on your birthday morning, before the texts and the cake and the singing — while the day still belongs to just you and God. It's also good on birthday eve, when the reflective mood tends to arrive early.
A Verse to Hold On To
"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." — Psalm 90:12 (KJV)
