A Prayer for a Memorial Service

God of every generation, we gather from many places and many walks of life, drawn together by one person we all loved. Before we say anything else, we say thank You — thank You that they lived, and thank You that their life touched ours.

As stories are told today, let there be laughter as well as tears, for both are honest, and You welcome both. Help us remember not only how they died, but how they lived — the kindness, the stubborn hope, the small habits that made them entirely themselves.

Hold gently those for whom this loss is newest and deepest. Give rest to those who cared for them in their final days, and grace to all of us who must learn to carry their memory forward.

Keep our loved one safe in Your eternal care, where sorrow and sighing flee away, and keep us in Your peace until our own day comes.

Use this prayer to open or close a memorial service or celebration of life, especially when those gathered come from different backgrounds and traditions. It also reads well at a smaller gathering at home, weeks or months after the loss.
