A Prayer for Grief and Comfort
God of all comfort, I come to You with a heavy heart. I do not have fine words today. I barely have words at all. But You have never needed them. You understand tears in every language.
This grief is heavier than I knew anything could be. It is there when I wake and there when I sleep, in the empty chair, the quiet phone, the small moments that used to be shared. I am not asking You to take it away all at once. I am asking You to sit with me inside it.
You say You are near to the brokenhearted. Be near to me now. Nearer than the ache, nearer than the memories, near enough that even in the worst hours I am never truly alone.
Carry what I cannot carry, Lord. The mornings that feel impossible. The paperwork and phone calls no one warns you about. The kindness of others that somehow makes me cry harder. Give me strength for one day at a time — and when a day is too much, one hour at a time.
Thank You for the love that makes this loss so heavy. Grief is what love does when it has nowhere to go, so I will not be ashamed of my tears. You keep count of every one of them.
I do not need to be strong for You. I do not need to hurry for You. Heal me slowly and gently, in Your time and not the world's, and hold on to me on the days I cannot hold on to You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this in the raw early days of loss, or months later when the world has moved on and you have not. There is no wrong time and no deadline — grief keeps its own calendar, and God keeps company with you through all of it. If the weight ever feels like more than you can carry alone, talking with a counselor or grief group is a gift, not a failure.
A Verse to Hold On To
"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." — Psalm 34:18 (KJV)
