A Prayer for the First Holidays Without Them

Father, the holidays are coming, and for the first time they will come without them. Everyone else seems to be celebrating, and I am just trying to get through the season. Be near to me in it.

You know what this table will feel like with one chair empty. You know which song, which recipe, which tradition will undo me without warning. Stay close in those moments, Lord. Let the tears come when they come — they are not a ruined holiday; they are love.

Give me the freedom to do this my own way this year. If I keep every tradition, bless it. If I cannot face some of them yet, forgive nothing — there is nothing to forgive. Help the family around me give each other room to grieve differently, and gently.

And somewhere in this season, tuck in a small unexpected comfort — a memory that makes me smile before it makes me cry, a moment of warmth I did not think I would feel. Not to replace them. Nothing will. Just to remind me that You are here, and that love this strong does not end.

Pray this in the weeks before Thanksgiving, Christmas, a birthday, or an anniversary that now carries an ache. It can help to pray it again the morning of the day itself.
