A Prayer for the Anniversary of a Death

Father, today the calendar remembers what my heart never forgot. A year has turned — or many years — and still there is a place at the table, a voice in old recordings, a name I cannot say without feeling it.

Thank You that love outlasts a lifetime. Thank You for every memory that surfaces today, even the ones that arrive with tears attached. I would rather ache with love than forget and feel nothing.

You have kept my loved one all this time, and You have kept me too — through the first hard year, through birthdays and empty holidays, through nights when grief came back like weather. Your mercies really have been new every morning, even the mornings I could not see them.

On this anniversary, let me grieve without shame and remember without fear. Keep the one I love safe in Your presence, and keep me walking gently forward, until the day You wipe away every tear for good.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this on the anniversary itself — at the graveside, over a candle at home, or anywhere the day finds you. Some people pray it the night before, when the ache tends to arrive early. If the day feels heavier than you expected, that is normal; be as gentle with yourself as this prayer is.
