A Prayer for a Broken Heart

God of all comfort, my heart is broken, and I am not going to dress it up. You already know. You saw the moment it happened, and You have seen every hour since.

I keep reaching for something that isn't there anymore. The phone I almost pick up. The chair that stays empty. The future I had already furnished in my mind, now standing like a house I can't live in.

Lord, I don't need someone to tell me to look on the bright side. I need You. Your Word says You are close to the brokenhearted — so come close. Closer than the ache.

Hold the pieces of me tonight. I'm not asking You to hurry; hearts don't heal on a schedule, and I know You are patient with the grieving. Just don't let me grieve alone.

Heal me the way You heal — honestly, thoroughly, from the inside out. Bind up this wound so that it closes clean, not with bitterness sealed inside it. Keep my heart soft, Lord. It would be so easy to let it turn to stone, and stone feels safer. But stone can't love, and I don't want to stop being someone who loves.

Give me small mercies while I wait: one night of real sleep, one friend who knows what to say — or knows not to, one morning where the first thought isn't the loss.

And someday — I trust You for a someday — let me look back and find that You were carrying me through every one of these days I didn't think I could get through.

Because that is who You are. You heal the broken in heart. Start with mine.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this in the raw first days of a loss, or months later when the ache resurfaces. Grief has no deadline, and needing time — or the help of a good counselor — is never a failure of faith. Pray it as often as the hurt returns.

A Verse to Hold On To

"He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds." — Psalm 147:3 (KJV)
