A House Blessing Prayer for a New Home

Lord, the boxes are barely unpacked, but before this house fills up with our things, we want it to fill up with You.

Bless this home from the doorstep to the rooftop. Bless the kitchen — let good meals and honest talk happen here. Bless the bedrooms — give us rest, and guard our sleep. Bless the living room — let laughter be a regular sound in it. Bless the door — let it open easily to friends, to neighbors, and to anyone who needs a safe place to land.

Keep out what should stay out: harm and fear, quarrels that fester, and the kind of busyness that makes a family strangers under one roof.

Let what should grow here, grow: patience, forgiveness, gratitude, and children — or grandchildren, or guests — who feel it the moment they walk in: this is a place where people are loved.

You built us long before we signed for this house, Lord. Now build our home. Unless You build it, we labor in vain — so be the builder, be the keeper, and be the most welcome guest at every table we set.

As for this house and everyone in it: we will serve the Lord.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this on move-in day, at a housewarming, or the first night you sleep in the new place. Some families walk from room to room and pray a line in each one; others pray it together at the first meal in the new kitchen.

A Verse to Hold On To

"Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it." — Psalm 127:1 (KJV)
