An Invocation Prayer for an Event or Gathering

Almighty God, we pause at the beginning of this gathering to acknowledge You. Before a single word is spoken from this platform, we speak first to You.

Thank You for this day, which You have made. Thank You for safe travel for those who came from far away, and for the hands that prepared this place — the planners and the servers, the ones who set the chairs and checked the microphones, the many small kindnesses that no one saw.

We invite Your presence into this room. Where there are strangers, make them friends. Where there are old friends, deepen the bond. Where anyone has come in carrying a private sorrow, sit beside them, Lord, and be their comfort.

We remember, too, those who wished to be here and could not come. Hold them close tonight, and let them know they were missed.

Bless the purpose that brings us together. Bless those who will speak, that their words may be true and kind. Bless those who will listen, that something said here may take root and bear good fruit long after tonight. Bless those who organized and those who simply showed up, for a gathering is made of both.

Give us gratitude for the food we may share, laughter that comes easily, and conversations that matter.

And when this event is over and the lights go out, send us home a little better than we came — more thankful, more hopeful, more mindful of You and of one another.

We ask all this humbly and gladly, in Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

An invocation is the prayer that officially opens an event — a banquet, a graduation, a ceremony, a conference. Read it slowly from the podium and don't rush the pauses. If the room is still chattering, simply begin with "Let us pray" and wait two seconds.
