Advent Candle Lighting Prayers (All Four Weeks)
God of Hope, we light this first candle and begin to wait. Long ago Your people watched through dark years for a promised King, and You did not forget them. As this small flame pushes back the dark, teach us to watch for You the same way — certain that what You have promised, You will do.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Week Two — Peace
Prince of Peace, we light the second candle for You. The world outside is loud, and our own hearts are often louder. Quiet us now, the way this flame burns steady in a still room. Bring peace where there is quarreling — in nations, in neighborhoods, and around this very table.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Week Three — Joy
Lord, we light the third candle, and it stands for joy. Not the kind that depends on everything going right, but the kind the angels sang about — good tidings of great joy, for all people, even us. Light that joy in this family tonight, and let it spill onto everyone we meet this week.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Week Four — Love
Father, the wreath is almost full of light, and this last candle is for love. You so loved the world that You gave — not a lecture, not a list, but Your own Son. Christmas is almost here. Make room in us the way Bethlehem never did, and let love be the gift we are known for.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray These
Light the candles together as a family once a week through Advent — Sunday dinner works well, with lights dimmed and one more candle burning than the week before. Let a different person light the candle and read each week; even the youngest reader can manage these. There is no wrong way to do it — the point is simply to stop, light a flame, and remember together Who is coming.
