A Thanksgiving Day Prayer

Father, before we lift a fork, we lift our hearts.

Thank You for this day set apart for the one thing we mean to do all year and mostly forget: to stop, to look around, and to say thank You.

Thank You for this table and everything on it — for the food, and for the farmers, truckers, and grocers behind it; for the cooks in this family who woke up early and loved us with their hands today.

Thank You for the people in these chairs. Not one of them got here by accident. Thank You for the old stories we will tell again, the new faces welcomed in, the babies who have joined us since last year, and the elders whose prayers have covered us longer than we know.

Thank You for the year behind us — not just the bright days, but the hard ones too, because You were faithful in all of them. For prayers answered quietly, for strength we didn't know we had, for mercies that were new every single morning: thank You.

We remember the ones who are not at this table — those far away, and those we miss with an ache no meal can fill. Hold them close, Lord, as You hold us.

And make our gratitude bigger than today. Open our hands to the neighbor with an empty table, the stranger far from home, the family barely holding on. Let thanks turn into giving, the way it always should.

We enter Your gates with thanksgiving, Father, and Your courts with praise. Bless this food, bless this family, and receive our thanks.
