A Thanksgiving Prayer in a Hard Year

Father, this Thanksgiving is not like the others.

We come to this table carrying things that are hard to carry — an empty chair, a hard diagnosis, a year that took more than it gave. You see all of it. We don't have to pretend with You.

So we will not offer You a polished gratitude today. We offer You an honest one.

Thank You that we made it to this table at all. Thank You for the people still beside us, for the small mercies that got us through — a friend who called, a night we finally slept, strength that arrived one morning at a time.

Thank You that Your mercies are new every morning, even the mornings we didn't want to face. Thank You that we are not consumed — worn, yes; grieving, maybe; but not consumed, because Your compassion has never failed us.

Hold the ones we miss, Lord. Hold the ones at this table who are barely holding on. And somewhere beneath the ache, plant a quiet hope for the year to come.

We give thanks — not because everything is good, but because You are.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this when the holiday feels heavier than festive — after a loss, a diagnosis, a divorce, or a long season of struggle. Grief and gratitude can sit at the same table; this prayer makes room for both.

A Verse to Hold On To

"It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." — Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)
