A Christmas Prayer

Father, we come to You at Christmas the way the shepherds came to Bethlehem — just as we are, a little worn, a little amazed, drawn by a light we did not make.

Thank You for Jesus. Thank You that when the world was dark, You did not send help from a distance. You came. You took on skin and breath and a beating heart, and You were laid in a manger because there was no room anywhere else.

Make room in us, Lord. Clear away the hurry and the worry we have carried all year, and let the quiet wonder of that first night settle over this house.

Thank You for the people around us this Christmas — for family near and far, for friends who feel like family, and for every hand that cooked, wrapped, traveled, and gave.

We remember the ones who are missing from our table this year. Hold them, and hold us, in Your gentle keeping. Be near to everyone for whom this season is heavy — the lonely, the grieving, the ones far from home. Let them know they are not forgotten, by You or by us.

Give us the joy of the angels, the wonder of the shepherds, the patience of the wise men, and the quiet trust of Mary, who treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.

And when the lights come down and the carols fade, let Christmas stay in us — in kinder words, in open hands, in hearts that have made room for You.

Thank You for the greatest gift, given to all people: a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
