A Prayer for the Family Keeping Watch

God of all comfort, You see this family keeping watch — the chairs pulled close to the bed, the cold coffee, the whispered updates, the strange way the hours stretch and blur. Keeping vigil is an act of love, and love this faithful is heavy to carry. Carry it with them.

Give them strength for the waiting, which is its own kind of labor. When they need to sleep, let them sleep without guilt, trusting that You keep watch when they cannot. When they need to cry, give them room to cry. When they need to laugh at an old story around the bed, let them laugh — love sounds like that too.

Keep tenderness between them, Lord. Weariness can make words sharp; soften every voice in this room. Help them forgive quickly and take turns gladly, and remind them they are on the same side — the side of the one they love.

And in the hardest moment, when it comes, be nearer to them than their own breath. Do not let anyone stand in that hour alone.

When to Pray This

Pray this during the long days and nights of a bedside vigil — for your own family, or for a family you love from a distance. If you are the one keeping watch, hear the middle stanza as permission: resting, eating, and stepping outside for air are not failures of love.
