A Prayer When You Cannot Be There at the End
Father, the one I love is dying, and I am not there. The miles between us feel like a weight on my chest. I would give anything to be holding their hand, and I cannot — and it hurts, Lord. You know it hurts.
So I do the one thing distance cannot stop: I pray.
You are already in that room. You were there before the illness came, and You will not step out at the end. Be everything I cannot be — the hand on theirs, the voice of comfort, the steady presence through the night.
Thank You for the people who are at the bedside — family, friends, nurses, hospice workers. Bless every kind face my loved one sees. Let none of my love be lost in the distance; You have carried prayers farther than this.
And Lord, tend the ache in me — the guilt that whispers I should have found a way, the grief that started before the goodbye. Remind me that love is not measured in miles, and that the one I love is not leaving my world without entering Yours.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this when death is near and you are far away — across a country, across an ocean, or simply unable to travel. Pray it before a phone call held to their ear, or in place of the visit you could not make. Being absent from the room does not make your love, or your prayer, any less real.
A Verse to Hold On To
"If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me." — Psalm 139:9–10 (KJV)
