A Prayer for a Friend Going Through a Hard Time
God of all comfort, my friend is going through something hard, and I keep reaching for the right words and coming up empty. You don't need my words to be right. You just need me to bring my friend to You — so here I am.
You see what this season is costing them: the sleep they're not getting, the brave face they put on for everyone, the moments alone in the car when the brave face comes off. Draw near to them in exactly those moments, Lord. Be closer than the trouble is.
Give them strength for one day at a time — not the whole mountain, just today's climb. Send small mercies: a good night's sleep, an unexpected kindness, a moment of laughter that reminds them they are still themselves. And if part of their burden needs more help than friendship — a doctor, a counselor, someone wise — give them courage to reach for it, and peace when they do.
Now, Lord, teach me my part. Keep me from easy answers and tidy lessons; my friend doesn't need a sermon, they need a friend. Help me listen longer than is comfortable. Help me keep showing up after everyone else has gone back to their normal lives — the second month, the sixth month, however long this takes.
When they can't pray, I will pray for them. When they can't hope, lend them mine. And when this hard time finally passes — and Lord, let it pass — let us look back and see that You were there the whole way through.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this when someone you love is walking through a long valley — a loss, an illness, a divorce, a season of depression — and you want your care for them to run deeper than "thinking of you." Pray it regularly; long troubles need long-haul friends.
A Verse to Hold On To
"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee." — Isaiah 43:2 (KJV)
