A Grandparent's Prayer for My Grandchildren

Lord, it's me again, at this same kitchen table, with the same coffee and the same names on my heart. You know them all. You knew them before I did — before the phone calls that said "It's a girl," "It's a boy," before I ever held them and lost my heart for good. My grandchildren, Lord. I bring You my grandchildren.

Watch over every one of them today. The little ones learning to share and to read, the middle ones finding out who they are, the grown ones out in the world where I can't see them. I cannot follow them everywhere. You can. So go, Lord — into their classrooms and cars, their friendships and phones, their late nights and their long decisions.

Protect their bodies from harm and their hearts from hardness. When the world is unkind to them, be their comfort. When they are tempted to be unkind, be their conscience. Give them friends who make them braver and better, and the good sense to walk away from the other kind.

Most of all, Lord, let them know You. Not just my stories about You — let them find You for themselves, the way I did, and learn that You are faithful. Long after I am gone from this table, let the prayers I prayed here keep on working, generation after generation.

Bless their mothers and fathers with wisdom and patience. And bless me with years enough to see these children grow, arms strong enough to keep hugging them, and a heart that never stops praying their names.

They are the best gift You ever handed me, Lord. I am handing them back to You, every morning, for safekeeping.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this in the morning with your coffee, naming each grandchild one by one. Many grandparents keep a photo or a list of names tucked in their Bible for exactly this prayer — a small daily habit with a long reach.

A Verse to Hold On To

"But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children." — Psalm 103:17 (KJV)
