An Independence Day Prayer

God of all nations, today we thank You for freedom.

We did not earn the liberty we woke up with this morning. It was handed to us — bought by sacrifices we never saw, kept by people whose names we will never know. Let us never hold it carelessly.

We remember before You all who serve: those in uniform far from home today, the veterans carrying wounds seen and unseen, the families who wait by the door. Guard them, and let a grateful country be worthy of them.

And Lord, keep us humble. A nation is not great because it says so, but because it does justice, loves mercy, and walks humbly with You. Where we have been proud, correct us. Where we have failed our own ideals, forgive us and give us the courage to do better.

Heal what divides us. Around tonight's picnic tables and fireworks sit neighbors who vote differently, worship differently, hope differently — and every one of them is Your handiwork. Teach us to disagree without despising, and to use our freedom to serve one another in love.

Bless this land, and make us a blessing.

When to Pray This

Pray this on the Fourth of July — before the cookout, at a family gathering, or in the quiet before the fireworks start. It also fits any national holiday when you want gratitude to run deeper than the celebration.
