A Prayer to Resist Temptation
Lord, it's back. The same temptation, knocking at the same door.
You know which one — I don't even have to name it, though naming it to You takes away some of its power, so I will, silently, now.
I'm not going to act shocked that I'm tempted. Your Word says there's no temptation that isn't common to man. I'm not uniquely broken. I'm human, and the pull is real, and pretending otherwise has never once helped me.
But Your Word says something else too: You are faithful. You won't let me be tempted beyond what I can bear. And with the temptation You make a way of escape.
So my prayer is simple: show me the exit, and give me the legs to take it.
Sometimes the escape is a closed app. Sometimes it's leaving the room, or the store, or the conversation. Sometimes it's calling a friend and saying the embarrassing sentence out loud. Whatever it is right now, make it obvious — and make me quick.
Strengthen the wanting underneath, Lord. I don't just want to not sin; I want to want You more than this. Feed the deeper hunger this temptation is impersonating.
And because You know me: if I stumble, keep me from the enemy's favorite trick — the shame spiral that says "you've blown it, might as well keep going." Your mercies are new every morning. Some days they're new every hour.
Watch with me, Lord. The spirit is willing; the flesh needs backup.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this at the first knock — temptation is easiest to resist at the door, hardest in the living room. It's also worth praying in the morning before the tempting hours arrive, and honestly with a trusted friend who can ask you how it's going.
A Verse to Hold On To
"God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape." — 1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV)
