A Prayer After Relapse
God, I fell. After all the clean days, after all the promises, after everyone who said they were proud of me — I fell. And the shame is telling me not to even pray right now, that You've heard this apology before and You're done.
But I'm praying anyway, because I remember something: shame is not Your voice. It never was. Your voice says come here, not go away.
So here I am. No excuses, no cover story. I relapsed, and I'm sorry, and I need You.
Forgive me — and help me forgive myself, which somehow feels harder. Don't let one fall become a free fall. Give me the courage to be honest fast: to call my sponsor, tell my counselor, tell the truth before the secret gets its strength back.
Remind me what recovery has taught me: a relapse is a chapter, not the whole book. The days I stayed sober were real. They still count. And the person I was becoming is still who I'm becoming.
You are the God of again. So we begin again — right now, this hour. Day one, with You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this as soon after a relapse as you can — the sooner shame is dragged into the light, the less power it has. Then take the practical step the prayer names: call your sponsor, your counselor, or someone in your program today. Relapse is a common part of many recovery stories; what matters most is what happens in the next 24 hours.
A Verse to Hold On To
"Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me." — Micah 7:8 (KJV)
