A Prayer for Freedom from Addiction
God, I am tired of this fight, and I am tired of losing it alone. You know what has its hooks in me. You know how many times I've promised myself "never again" before breakfast, and broken it by night. I cannot manage this. I'm done pretending I can.
So I'm doing the one thing left to do: I'm handing it to You. My addiction, my excuses, my hiding places, the version of me I show people and the one I don't — take all of it, Lord. It's Yours.
Break the grip of this thing on my body and my mind. You have been setting captives free for a long time, and I am asking You to do it again, here, in me.
I know freedom usually comes the slow way — through meetings and sponsors, counselors and honest phone calls, through doctors who understand what this does to a brain. Give me the humility to use every rope You throw me. Getting help is not weakness. It is how the rescued get rescued.
When the craving comes — and it will come — be closer than the craving. Put one thought between me and the old road: that I am Your child, and Your child is worth fighting for.
Rebuild what this addiction has damaged: the trust of people I love, the health of this body, the years I'd write off if You weren't a God who restores years.
I don't ask for a lifetime of sobriety tonight. I ask for today. Just today, with You. And tomorrow I will come back and ask again.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this at the beginning of recovery, in the middle of a craving, or any night the pull feels stronger than you are. It is built to be prayed daily — freedom tends to arrive one honest day at a time. Pray it alongside real-world help, not instead of it: a recovery program, a counselor, a doctor, a sponsor. God works through all of them.
A Verse to Hold On To
