A Prayer for One Day of Sobriety at a Time

God, I'm not asking You for forever this morning. Forever is too heavy to carry before coffee.

I'm asking for today. Keep me sober today. When the old voice calls, help me not answer. When the craving rises, stand between it and me. Put a meeting, a phone call, a friend wherever I'm going to need one.

Tonight, let me lie down clean and sober, and thank You for one more day. Tomorrow, I'll be back to ask again. That's the deal, Lord. You and me, daily.

When to Pray This

Pray this every morning before the day starts making its arguments — many people in recovery say it on their knees, with their coffee, or on the drive to work. It sits naturally beside a Twelve Step program, a sponsor's phone number, and an evening prayer of thanks. Sobriety is built exactly this way: one asked-for, fought-for, grateful day at a time.
