A Prayer of Thanks for Recovery

Lord, I want to say thank You while it's fresh — before I get used to this life and start calling it ordinary. Because I remember when none of this was possible.

Thank You for today's sobriety, and yesterday's, and every single day in the count. I know exactly how each one got here: You, carrying me through hours I couldn't have survived alone.

Thank You for the people You sent — the sponsor who answered at midnight, the counselor who saw through my best material, the room full of strangers who became family, the loved ones who stayed when staying was hard. I was rescued by a crowd, and You gathered every one of them.

Thank You for the small returned things: mornings without dread, money that lasts the month, my own eyes in the mirror, the trust coming back slowly in the voices of my family.

Keep me humble, Lord. Keep me honest. Let me never guard this gift carelessly, and let me become for someone else what those people were for me — proof that You still set people free.

For this recovered life, thank You, thank You.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this on sobriety milestones — 30 days, a year, ten years — but also on unremarkable Tuesdays, because gratitude is one of recovery's strongest guards. Many people pray it before speaking at a meeting or sponsoring someone new, as a way of remembering where the credit goes.

A Verse to Hold On To

"He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings." — Psalm 40:2 (KJV)
