A Prayer for a Loved One Struggling with Mental Health
Lord, You see the one I love, and You see how they are struggling. I watch it from the outside and I feel so helpless. I can't think their thoughts for them. I can't carry what's inside their mind. But You can go where I cannot.
So go to them, God. Sit with them in the places they won't describe to me. When their own mind speaks cruelly to them, speak louder, and speak kindly.
Give them the courage to accept help — a counselor's wisdom, a doctor's care, a friend's honesty — and take away any shame that keeps them from reaching for it.
And Lord, help me. Teach me when to speak and when to just stay. Keep me from easy answers and impatient advice. Give me the long love this needs — the kind that keeps showing up quietly, without keeping score.
I place them in Your hands tonight, because Your hands are stronger and gentler than mine. Watch over the one I love.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this when someone you love is in a hard place mentally and you don't know what else to do. It helps to pray it before visits and phone calls, when you most need patience and gentleness. If you ever fear for their safety, don't carry it alone — the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline also takes calls from worried family and friends.
A Verse to Hold On To
