A Prayer for My Expecting Wife

Father, my wife is carrying our child, and I hardly have words for it. Two heartbeats in the room when we thought there was one. Thank You. Before anything else — thank You.

Watch over her, Lord, in these months. Her body is doing quiet, holy work every hour of every day, and I can only stand beside her and marvel. Give her strength when she is exhausted, relief when she is sick and sore, and sleep — please, Lord — sleep, even with all the kicking.

Guard her heart as well as her body. When the worries come at night — the what-ifs no expecting mother escapes — meet her there with Your peace. Remind her that You are already with our baby, knitting this little one together in secret, just as You once knit her.

Bless the doctors, nurses, and midwives who walk with us. Give them wisdom at every visit and steady hands on the day of delivery. Whenever that day comes, be in the room, Lord. Bring our child safely into her arms — and into mine.

And shape me in these months, too. I am becoming a father while she becomes a mother, and she is carrying more of the load. Make me patient, useful, and gentle. Teach me to love her in the ways that count now — the late-night errands, the swollen feet, the listening.

We already love this child, Lord. You loved them first. Keep them both — my wife and our baby — in the shelter of Your hand.

When to Pray This

Pray this anytime during the pregnancy — over her belly at night, on the way to an ultrasound, or in the nervous joy of the final weeks. Many fathers pray it aloud so she can hear it, too.
