A Prayer for Someone Caring for an Aging Parent

Father, the hands that once held mine now need mine to hold them. I am learning to parent my parent, and no one warned me how strange it would feel — tender and heavy at the same time. Meet me in this reversal, Lord. It is holy ground, even when it smells like a pillbox and sounds like the same story told three times.

Give me patience that does not run out by evening. When I must repeat myself, keep my voice soft. When they resist the help they need, remind me how hard it is to hand over the car keys, the checkbook, the independence of a lifetime. Let me protect their dignity as fiercely as I protect their safety.

Help me honor my father and mother in this new, unglamorous way — not with words on a card, but with showing up, again, on an ordinary Tuesday.

And Lord, tend to me too. I am a child losing a parent slowly, and some days I grieve them while they are still here. Give me help I do not have to beg for, rest I do not have to earn, and moments of unexpected sweetness with them that I will keep for the rest of my life.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this in the car outside your parent's house, before the hard conversations about driving or moving, or at the end of a day when your patience wore thin. If you snapped at them today, pray it anyway — this road is long, and God's mercy covers tired children too. Accepting outside help, from family or professional caregivers, is part of honoring them, not a failure to.

A Verse to Hold On To

"Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth." — Psalm 71:9 (KJV)
