A Prayer for Doctors and Surgeons

Great Physician, we bring You the doctors and surgeons — the ones we trust with what we cannot fix ourselves. You gave them minds able to learn the body's wonders and hands able to mend it. Every skill they carry began as Your gift. Bless the gift, and bless the ones who carry it.

Give them wisdom, Lord — in the exam room, reading symptoms like a hard text; at the scan, catching what is easily missed; in the family meeting, choosing words that are honest and kind at the same time. When a decision could go two ways, tip their judgment toward the right one.

Steady the surgeons especially: calm their hands, focus their minds, and be present over every operating table, unseen but not uninvolved.

And Father, tend the part of them no patient sees — the weight of outcomes they still think about, the fatigue of being needed constantly, the distance between how much they carry and how little they are allowed to show. Doctors are not gods, though we sometimes ask them to be. Let them bring their burdens to You, the only One who never needs to be off call.

When to Pray This

Pray this before a loved one's surgery or a big appointment, naming the doctor if you know them. It is also a good prayer for physicians themselves, and for anyone who wants to thank God for the medical care they have received. Trusting God and trusting your doctor are not rivals; this prayer holds both.
