A Prayer for a Long Hospital Stay
Father, the days here have started to blur together. The first rush of visitors has thinned, the get-well cards have stopped coming, and what is left is the long middle — slow mornings, small setbacks, progress measured in inches. Be God of the long middle, Lord.
Give endurance where excitement has run out. Homesickness is real in a hospital bed — for one's own pillow, one's own kitchen, the ordinary life waiting outside these windows. Comfort that ache, and let home stay a hope, not a wound.
Teach us to find Your mercies in the routine: a nurse who remembers the small preferences, a good report after a hard week, sunlight moving across the floor, a friend who still calls in week four. None of these are small to You.
Keep discouragement from settling in like a roommate. On the days when progress stalls, hold the hope that this bed is not forever, and that You waste none of this waiting.
Bless the staff who have become familiar faces, and the family stretched thin by the long haul. Sustain everyone this stay is asking something of.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this when a hospital stay has stretched from days into weeks — for yourself from the bed, or for someone you love from afar. It fits the unglamorous stretch of recovery, when the crisis has passed but home is still far off. Pray it as many mornings as the stay lasts.
A Verse to Hold On To
"The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore." — Psalm 121:8 (KJV)
