A Prayer for Someone with a Serious Diagnosis
Father, a doctor said a word in a quiet room, and life divided into before and after. Whatever the name of this illness — whether it takes the memory, or the movement, or the strength, or the years — You are not afraid of it, and You have not stepped back from us because of it. Come close now, Lord. Closer than the diagnosis.
Be with the one who received this news. Some days they are brave, and some days they are not, and You love them the same on both. When the body will not obey, be their steadiness. When words or memories slip away, hold what they cannot hold — for even what they forget, You remember, and even who they forget, You keep. Nothing about them is lost to You. They are not this disease. They are Your beloved child, whole in Your sight.
Give courage for what the coming months ask: the appointments and adjustments, the therapies and the slow redefining of normal. Where healing is possible, we ask for it, gladly and openly. Where the road is long instead, give grace that arrives daily, like manna — enough for today, with today's portion of hope.
Bless the doctors, nurses, and therapists who will walk this road with them. Give them wisdom in every decision and kindness in every conversation. And uphold the family learning this new landscape, with its fears they do not always say out loud.
Lord, the future feels like a hallway with the lights off. But You are already standing in it. Every day this illness touches is still a day held in Your hands. We will walk it one day at a time, and we will not walk it alone.

When to Pray This
Pray this in the raw days after hard news — a diagnosis of dementia, a stroke, Parkinson's, cancer, or any illness that redraws the future. It can be prayed by the patient, a spouse, an adult child, or a friend. Keep going to every appointment and following the care plan; this prayer walks alongside good medicine, never instead of it.
